Comfort, Help, Trouble, God

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Alias grew up an only child with few friends. She wanted to move to another state for college to experience big city life, and got accepted to NYU with a full scholarship – dream come true.

Perhaps, I will be able to make more friends and new relationships in New York. Big city big hearts… she laughed.

Quickly enough, Alias realized her dream may not come as easy as she wished. On her way to school, she got lost at the subway after taking Train A uptown instead of downtown.

Alias tried to ask the other passengers for directions, but everyone seemed to be in a rush and ignored her. She could not understand how people could be so impolite and mean.

Finally, a gentleman helped her find her way to school. It was her first day at school, and now she couldn’t find the building for her first class. Another student eventually led her to her class, but she became a little discouraged and wondered why she came to NY.

It was a rough day but Alias was deeply grateful for the few that helped her.

Six Months Later…

Six months into her studies at NYU she still had not made friends. Alias loved to smile and laughs at the simple things.  One day, Alias ran into the popular girl in her major crying alone.

Alias asked her ‘Is everything okay? You don’t have to tell me if you want to. But I’m here if you need me.
Alias sat next to her as she continued to cry. After an hour she calmed herself, and was amazed Alias missed class to be with her.

“I’m Helena,” she said as she stretched out her hand.

“And I’m Alias.”

Helena then said “You’re weird. You missed class and sat here with me even when I ignored you. Thanks though, I needed company after all.

Alias laughed, “You’re welcome, Helena. I received tons of comfort when I needed it. I guess now is payback time.”

Helena was amazed at how kind-hearted Alias was. She told Alias, why she was crying and why did not want her friends to see her or even know she was crying, and they became friends through this special bond.

The Moral of the Story

When you receive help or comfort while in need, it does not stop there. You too have to become a pillar for someone to lean on in times of trouble.

It is funny how sometimes you receive help from those you least expect. Helena never said a word to Alias, and would never have been friends with her, but when she needed comfort Alias was the one there for her.

Sometimes, we may be praying for something but it is when we show acts of kindness to even strangers that our prayers may be answered. Alias never expected to make friends in NY after her many mean encounters, yet she found one in a stranger in need.

A friend once said “If you want to go fast in life, go alone. But if you want to go far in life, then go with people.”

Let’s be there for our friends, family, neighbors, and even strangers, comforting one another as God comforts us. Life is not easy, but it is bearable when we do it together.
